City Nature Challenge Delhi 2026

Cities are often imagined as places far removed from nature. Yet Delhi continues to support a remarkable diversity of life—birds in neighbourhood parks, insects in roadside vegetation, fungi after the rains, and plants quietly growing in forgotten corners of the city.

The City Nature Challenge invites people across the world to step outside and document the biodiversity of their cities using the iNaturalist platform. Over a few days, citizens observe and photograph plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms, contributing to a global effort to better understand urban biodiversity.

For City Nature Challenge Delhi 2026, we are building a network of walk leaders and volunteers who can help guide biodiversity walks, support participants, and strengthen the culture of citizen science in the city.

Who Can Become a Walk Leader?

We invite naturalists, birdwatchers, botanists, photographers, researchers, and biodiversity enthusiasts who are comfortable introducing people to nature in an informal setting.

Walk leaders may:

  • Guide biodiversity walks in parks, wetlands, campuses, or neighbourhood green spaces

  • Introduce participants to common flora and fauna

  • Help participants document observations using iNaturalist

  • Share their knowledge and curiosity about urban wildlife

You do not need to be an expert in everything—curiosity and willingness to engage with people are just as important.

Volunteer Opportunities

We are also looking for volunteers who can support the challenge in different ways:

  • Assisting during biodiversity walks

  • Helping participants upload observations on iNaturalist

  • Supporting communication and outreach

  • Documenting the event through photographs, videos, or short write-ups

  • Coordinating with local institutions or community groups

Why Participate?

City Nature Challenge is more than a documentation exercise. It is an opportunity to see the city differently—to notice the life that exists alongside us and to share that sense of discovery with others.

By volunteering or leading a walk, you help build a community of people who care about urban biodiversity and contribute to a growing database that supports ecological research and conservation.

Making a festival of urban biodiversity

In a fast-growing city like Delhi, surrounded by traffic, concrete, and constant movement, it is easy to assume that nature exists somewhere far away from us. Yet the city continues to pulse with life
